New Castle – fighting against the Turks

The building of the Nový zámok Castle (New Castle) is one of the architectural icons of the town. Its silhouette is unique in Europe; it reminds a rocket. It is also a place of Battles against Turks exposition with rare pieces of weapons. Moreover, the visitors of the castle are offered an extraordinary view of the town.

When Buda collapsed in 1526, the country had to manage an effective defence against Turkish expansion. For unimaginable 150 years the Turkish thread was a day-to-day reality of the Štiavnica region. Turks subdued many municipalities in its surrounding, but they never conquered Banská Štiavnica. It might have been caused by the fact that the inhabitants of Štiavnica sacrificed very much for their security: they built a fortification around the town which did not come cheap.

Besides the parish church rebuilt to become a renaissance military fortification, also the stone city gates were rebuilt to protect access roads to the town. An inner fortified circuit was another safety element with additional gates in the town centre. Out of the new stronghold, today known as Nový zámok Castle (New Castle), contemporary artillery could be used easily. The Castle had been a part of a sophisticated system of fortified buildings and a watchtower with a stable guard duty to protect wider territory of the central-Slovakia mining towns. From this watchtower the watchers called “vartáši” used to warn of the danger observed by smoke Morse code signals by day or fire Morse code signals at night. The signals were passed from a hill to a hill, from town to town.

Today, the building of the Nový zámok Castle (New Castle) is one of the architectural Icons of the town. Despite the hard times (and maybe thanks to them) the architecture which got inscribed in golden letters in the image of the town could arise. It has a silhouette unique in Europe. Did you notice it reminds a rocket? It is also a place of Battles against Turks exposition with rare pieces of weapons. Moreover, the visitors of the castle are offered an extraordinary view of the town.
